We are excited to showcase another Classroom Curiosity spotlight! The fourth graders took a trip to visit the Museum of Natural and Cultural History. In class, they have been studying the Native Americans. This field trip allowed students to explore the archaeology of the First Americans and the dynamic cultures of today’s Tribes! Did you know? The Museum of Natural and Cultural History has been in operation since 1935 and houses Oregon's most active archaeological research programs! Visitors can explore the museum’s climate, ecosystems, and landscape exhibits to experience the dynamic forces that shaped Oregon.

Exciting news! McKenzie is launching a new series, Classroom Curiosity, where we will spotlight different grades and teachers in action! Did you know? Female salmon can lay between 1,000 to 10,000 eggs, but only 15% will hatch. Eggs hatch after 6-20 weeks and are also the primary food source for Southern Resident Orcas. This isn’t new information for Mrs.Ill’s second-grade class! The students put salmon eggs into a fish tank in their classroom so they could observe the growing process. It was a fun and informative few weeks!

Currently, our district, much like many others across the nation, is grappling with a significant transportation staffing shortage. We have only two route drivers available to manage our three daily routes. Our Transportation Coordinator is driving daily routes as well. Recognizing this staffing strain, coupled with the shortage of applicants, Mr. Tompkins felt compelled to be equipped to help ensure our students' daily commute was uninterrupted. Take a look at Mr. Tompkin’s blog and the most recent article published in the McKenzie River Reflections as he outlines getting his CDL to help get kids to school. https://superintendenttompkins.blogspot.com/2023/10/why-i-got-my-cdl-and-why-you-should-too.html He hopes his story inspires others to learn to drive for our students. Our district is hosting a Drive the Bus Event on Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. At the event you will learn more about the job openings we have to become a driver in our district.
